RESEDA (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters rescued a dog Monday from a house fire that killed nine other animals.

Emergency personnel were called to the 6000 block of N. Calvin Avenue just before 5 p.m.

Los Angeles city fire spokeswoman Katherine Main said six caged cats and three dogs succumbed to smoke inhalation and were beyond help.

The small dog that was rescued was revived with oxygen and is doing well, Main said.

People at the scene also heard “popping sounds” that could have indicated some type of explosives or ammunition, Main said.

The fire at the one-story residence has been knocked down.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
